2 Jan 2011. Dedication of the Dennis M. Sams Fire Dept
The Satellite Beach Fire Station was renamed the Dennis
M. Sams Fire Station on 2 Jan 2011 in honor of a
volunteer fireman killed in a tragic training accident.
Dennis and his fellow SB firemen were in their final phases
of SCUBA training and all that remained was an open
water qualification dive. During the training, he lost his life
in the surf off of Fort Pierce, FL. Dennis joined the SBVFD
after moving to Satellite Beach with his family in 1974.
Prior to that, Dennis served 12 years in the United States
Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of Major.
In Nov 1967, Capt Sams deployed for a one-year
tour to Vietnam as an Infantry Officer. On two separate
missions, he displayed heroic courage under fire and was
awarded a purple heart and Bronze Star with combat
"V" for each engagement. Dennis lived his life as
a man of honor and in the service of others. SF
