The City of Satellite Beach has been designated as a "SolSmart Gold" community for encouraging solar market growth. In the name of clean energy, reducing emissions, energy efficiency, and leadership, the City has begun transitioning its facilities operations to run off of solar power. According to Green Achievement Target #1, the City is to run all of its municipal buildings and facilities off of renewable energy by 2037, with the starting point of this transition being City Hall and the Civic Center complex, which now have a functioning solar array powering their operations.
It is estimated that by 2023, there will be 1 terrawatt (1 trillion watts) of solar power capacity across the globe. This is enough to power a third of the United State's energy needs.
