Factoid:  Surfside Elementary School was going to open about a month late due to construction delays, but residents and teachers moved in furniture so the school could open on time.  The Volunteer Fire Department then supervised a bonfire of empty crates and construction debris.  Surfside Elementary School and Satellite High School opened the same day in 1962.  They were the first schools in Brevard County to be integrated.  Mayor Percy Hedgecock and Police Chief Pete Mardell spent the day at the schools making sure there would be no problems.  There were none.

BIRTHDAY EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:

September 11 Paddle Out Honoring Those Not Forgotten:  Join your friends and family for an evening of sharing memories of those who are gone, but not forgotten.  Bring your surfboard to Pelican Beach Park for a 6:30 p.m. Paddle Out and a moment of on-shore meditation to remember and honor victims of 9/11, military heroes, and close friends no longer with us.  We have so much to be thankful for and many people we should remember with honor, pride and love.
