Watercolor Beginners  No Class on Jan. 27 & Feb. 24

The correct watercolor supplies are essential for immediate satisfying work.  The magic of watercolors is achieved through the interaction of the right brush, on the right paper, with the right paint.  If the beginner skimps on any one of these, their efforts often seem inadequate, and are discouraging.

The following supplies will be adequate for this first course in which a full discussion of paint, paper, and brushes will give the beginner the basis for sound future purchases.

SUPPLY LIST:

Brushes: Watercolor brushes are natural sable (most expensive), synthetic hair, or a blend of each.  Bring at least two brushes tot he class.  A liner brush, and a flat brush (1" or larger).

Paints: Student watercolor paints (in tubes) are  most recommended because they are inexpensive and lend themselves to easier mixing in a palette.  Grumbacher Academy or Winsor & Newton are the most popular for getting started.  The following colors will be needed to paint the introductory composition: Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Thalo Blue, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Thalo Green, and Magenta.

Paper: Select a watercolor paper no less than 140 pound in weight, 9"x12" is a good, affordable size.

Palette: white plastic with a lid to keep paints moist,  Pick one with a sufficient number of wells to allow you to expand the selection of paints.

Other Essentials: soft paper towels, 2 water containers (margarine tubs are perfect), small water spray bottle (old purse size spray bottle works well), palette knife or small pocket knife, old (but clean) toothbrush, pencils #2, artist eraser, 12 " ruler

These supplies can be found at several stores (Meehans, etc).  However the best source is Art Supply of Melbourne on Highland Ave. in the downtown Eau Gallie area.
