Satellite Beach Marine Camp - 2008 Welcome to the 7th Year of Satellite Beach Marine Adventure Camp! GENERAL NOTES Campers will be learning about marine and other Florida eco-systems during this week, as
well as participating in activities geared towards learning more about these systems. Campers will be expected to participate in
these activities and maintain a good attitude towards what we are doing. If there is an activity that a camper is not as
excited about, they are asked to maintain a level of respect for the other campers who are
interested. Campers will be OUTSIDE, ALOT! It is hot,
buggy, sunny, sandy, wet, etc. There is a list of items that each camper is expected to bring with them, EACH
DAY. Please help them be prepared each day with
our weekly checklist. They will be responsible for carrying their own things -- please don’t overload
them too much. Campers will be expected to treat the lead counselors, junior counselors, program leaders
and other campers with respect. We stress manners
and respect all week long. A lead counselor will
speak with a campers parents at the end of each day if any problems have been encountered. On average, once a year we get a camper who is being
disrespectful and disruptive to the remaining 19 campers.
If this occurs, we WILL call the parent and have them come and pick them up - wherever
we are. They may be asked not to return. There is no return of money if this happens -- there
are many campers on the wait list who may have enjoyed that week of camp instead. Campers must be able to swim! If you have any
issues or concerns to speak with us about your campers swimming skills (ie. never been in the
ocean before -- this would be very good for us to know!), please do so at the first day of
camp. We always go to beaches with lifeguards and
plant ourselves in front of a lifeguard stand. But
if we have a weaker swimmer - or new swimmer, we will keep extra eyes on them as needed. Campers are welcome to bring entertainment for the vans, and money for gift shops, etc. Please make your campers aware that they are
responsible for their items. Taking that $300
gameboy to the beach might not be the best idea. Leaving
it in plain view on the seat in the van isn’t so good either.
We can not control where they leave things, etc. There
are 20 campers to make sure are safe - that is our main priority, not towels, etc.! If a parent has any issues or concerns, please speak with a lead counselor. We do our best to address every issue in a fair way to
all concerned, after finding out all of the details. We
feel it is fair for everyone to have their say and to explain what may have happened in a
certain situation. We don’t like to “jump to
conclusions” about any issue. Campers will be allowed to bring boogie boards to camp.
They may stay in the vans all week. Skim
boards are not allowed in lifeguarded areas, therefore there is no where for the kids to use
them. Please keep those at home. PLEASE be on TIME -
each morning to drop off, and each afternoon to pick up.
In the morning, if your child is not present by the time we need to leave, there is no
refund for that day. At the end of each day, we
will wait with campers 15 min after 4pm for them to be picked up. After that, they will be released to the game room -
which is a walk - in program (they are not made to stay). Attempting to pick up your child during a day of camp can be difficult. Sometimes we change plans due to weather, or a time
change in a program may switch our day around. We
do not carry cell phones into the water or during a program, so trying to call to find us is
difficult. We will try our best - but can not
guarantee it will be easy to accomplish. If you
know your child can’t make it one day due to an appt, etc - please let us know the afternoon
before so we aren’t waiting on the child. Camper Checklist Campers - help your parents make sure you are prepared for camp each day!
WEAR SUIT: Please
make sure to be wearing your bathing suit each day to camp.
Most days, we do not have time to wait for someone to get changed. TOWEL & CLOTHES:
Towels are needed for drying off before coming home, as well as a change of clothes. Campers must change their clothes before getting in
the vans to come home. They are more comfortable
and it makes the smell of the vans much more pleasurable for the whole summer! :) A plastic bag for the wet clothes and shoes is an
EXCELLENT idea! LUNCH: Unless specified otherwise, students must bring a lunch. This seemed to be a highly forgotten item last summer! WATER - LOTS: One
small bottle of water is not enough! Please send
them with as much as they can handle! 9 times out
of 10 - when a camper doesn’t feel well - it is dehydration. We bring a small refill cooler with water for emergencies - but not enough to
refill 20 kids multiple times a day. WATER SHOES: Campers
MUST bring water shoes every day! They must be
closed-toed as well and stay on their feet. Flip
flops do not count. Campers without proper shoes
WILL be asked to sit out of an activity if needed. We recommend trying NOT to buy brand new shoes and send them with your kids on
the first day of camp. Let them wear them around
- break them in -- or wear socks under them (It may not be fashionable - but it prevents tons
of blisters!). So many kids end up miserable their first day because of blisters from new shoes. SUNSCREEN & BUG SPRAY:
Campers are responsible to bring their own - every day!
We put it on more than one time a day - so they must have it! Please talk with your camper about its importance and
maybe do a little lesson on how to put it on. We
do not have the time to apply sunscreen to 20 campers - so they must know how to do it
themselves (we will of course help when needed!). MONEY: Campers may bring money for gift shops, and may be asked to bring money
for lunches (Friday’s especially). Please have
them put their money in a secure place and ask them not to “wave it around” in front of
the other kids. Pull it out only when needed - or
put it in an envelope with their names on it and the amount - and give to the lead counselor
in the morning.
