(Page 1) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome
to “Rhythm in Motion”... Welcome
to the 2005-2006 Rhythm in Motion dance and gymnastic program. I am excited
about the coming year and am looking forward to working with the returning
instructors. I am also pleased to welcome our new and very qualified instructors.
Rhythm in Motion offers classes in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, pointe, hip hop,
modern, tumbling and gymnastics. We also have specialized classes which include
leaps, turns, and stretching and conditioning. This year adult classes
will also be
offered. I sincerely hope that all students have a fun learning experience
in class while
expanding their dance education. I am always striving to improve our program
and therefore encourage your comments and suggestions. If you have any concerns
or questions during the year, please do not hesitate to talk to your
child’s instructor
or call me at 693-1943. My
Philosophy About Dance Education.... A
dance class is not just about learning steps. To me, it’s a whole
experience. It’s exciting
to watch children come into the studio for a first class--a little
apprehensive and
yet excited. As the weeks go by, I see them growing in their knowledge of
the music
and movement. I can see them responding to the discipline of the class and watch
their interaction with the other students. As they learn the vocabulary of dance
steps I can see their confidence grow. And finally, when they perform on stage,
the picture is complete. I am so grateful that I have a chance to be part
of this
process. Thank you. On
a Personal Note... I
am beginning my 25th year as Director of the dance program for the City of Satellite
Beach. My dancing career began at age 3 when I started dance classes with then
later had extensive training in New York. I have choreographed television, theater
and summer stock productions in the Philadelphia area. Before coming to Satellite
Beach in 1981, I resided on the island of St. Marten in the Netherlands
Antilles where I successfully owned and operated my own dance studio
for ten years. Lanore Hensley, Director(Page 2)------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I
have danced since the age of 3 and been a dance teacher for over 20 years.
I taught at
the Institute of Performing Arts in West Palm Beach for 10 years and was
the founding
member of their dance company, South Florida Dance Theatre. I've published
pieces for the Endowment of the Arts and judged several dance competitions.
My college education is in Elementary Education and Business. I love dance,
children and the arts and seeing it all work together. I feel teaching the
"love" of
dance is the most important form of the art, technique is formed in time.
I teach by
positive reinforcement. We all learn best by stressing what we do well and getting
help to improve in areas where we need help. I'm delighted to be a part of the Rhythm in Motion dance program. Melanie
Atkins
I
am a graduate of the University of South Florida where I received a
Bachelor of Science
in Dance Education. This degree allows me to work as a certified teacher at
any performing arts school as well as work at privately owned studios. I completed
my Associates in Arts with a focus in dance from Florida School of the Arts.
While there, I choreographed several student works for the student
showcase. I
also received a full talent scholarship to attend Florida School of the
Arts. During my
college career, I participated in many performances and worked with
several famous
choreographers such as Michael Foley and John Parks. In addition, I have also
had the opportunity to take dance classes from Twyla Tharp company member, Gretchen
Warren Ward, Sandra Waldrop Robinson, Geri Holihan and Liz Lerman. Recently,
I became a member of Florida Dance Master Association. I also attended the
National Dance Education Organization in Albuquerque, NM and have performed
and attended the American College Dance Festival at Emery Riddle University
in Atlanta, GA. Proudly, I am the director of the award winning Rhythm In
Motion competition team. I strive to incorporate these experiences into my teaching
philosophies, teaching style, and choreography at Rhythm in Motion and other
teaching venues. Penny Conwell
Ever since I was 4 years old I have been involved with dance and gymnastics. I grew up locally and I'm a 1996 graduate of Satellite High School where I was a cheerleader and a member of the Scorpionettes Dance Team. During that time I trained at Artistic's Gymnastics' Studio & coached Seahawk cheerleading under the direction of Mrs. Brandt. Sharing my dance and gymnastic knowledge with those girls was a very rewarding experince for me.
(page 3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My
early dance training began here in Brevard County and continued in Miami, Atlanta
and New York City. My studies were primarily in the field of classical
ballet, which
led to a professional career with several dance companies, including The Miami
Ballet, Charlotte City Ballet and Southern Ballet Theatre in Orlando. I performed
lead roles in many of the classics such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, The Firebird
and Les Sylphides, to name a few. After my retirement from performing, I taught
ballet for several dance schools. I look forward to bringing my love of
dance to
the students in the Rhythm In Motion program. My goal is not only to teach
the principles
of classical ballet, but also to impart the joy of moving to music. Terry GerkenI
have been teaching dance classes for over seven years. For ten years I
studied dance
through Florida Dance Master classes in Orlando. I am an alumnus of
Dussich Dance
Studio and a member of the Florida Dance Masters certification program. I have
been teaching all forms of dance including ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and preschool
classes. I have performed and won many competitions through my dance
company experience at Dussich Dance Studio. I have also choreographed for musicals
such as Victor/Victoria at Surf Side Playhouse as well as Footloose at Rockledge
High school. I currently teach at Dussich Dance Studio and Island Sports and
Dance Studio on Merritt Island. I am looking forward to joining the Rhythm
In Motion
team and sharing my hip hop style.
Shannon LockhartAt
the age of 8 years I began taking studio style gymnastics. I continued
with classes and
eventually became a teacher’s assistant. At Tawas Area High School in
Michigan, I
was a member of the school drill team. I became the captain in my senior
year and
returned as the instructor of the drill team while attending college.
I’ve been married for 17 years and have two wonderful children. I was thrilled
when asked to teach again in West Virginia and continued as an instructor after
moving to Florida. I am currently teaching at Brevard Dance Academy and in addition
also run the gymnastics program at Patrick Air Force Base. Dee ReevesAt
the age of 5, I began dancing in a small studio in Pennsylvania. After
moving to Montana
at the age of 12, I went under more advanced instruction with Jeff and Kathy
Geise. In college I studied dance and graduated in May of 2004 with a B.A. in
Dance and concentrations in both Performing and Teaching/Choreography from Mercyhurst
College. The primary focuses in college were ballet, modern, tap, jazz and
pointe. I had the opportunity to study under teachers such as Tauna
Hunter, Christine
Hay, Michael Gleason, Mark and Solvieg Santillano, Christopher Tabor, and many
other talented instructors while studying there. After graduating, I moved
to Florida
with the intention of staying only for the summer but fell in love with
the man
who is now my husband and have decided to stay longer than originally anticipated.
Also, in December we are expecting our first child with joyous hearts. Kristen Smillee(page 4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Student Teachers student
teachers are often used for large classes. These
student teachers are supervised by the instructor and have extensive knowledge
in the dance and/or gymnastic field. Curriculum BALLET
is
the foundation of all dance and is used in every form. Class usually begins
with barre movements and stretch, along with a review of all the positions.
Once the barre has been completed, students go on to work center floor,
which includes adagio and petite battement. This is followed by movements,
which require traveling across the room. The class is finished with grand
reverence. Ballet is the most disciplined form of dance, but is still very enjoyable
and most beneficial in teaching poise, grace and coordination. BALLET,
TAP & TUMBLING is
designed to expose the younger children to as much
variety in dance as possible. Approximately twenty minutes is allowed for each
section. This combination class is offered until the age of 6 when most children
have experienced the basics of gymnastics. If they wish to continue, an hour-long
gymnastics class is recommended. COMPETITION
DANCE TEAM is
a class offered to advance students who wish to
travel to all areas of Florida and compete with their peers in all forms
of dance.
Because of the skill level required to participate in this class, this
class is by
invitation only. GYMNASTICS
beginner
class is designed to introduce basic gymnastic skills along
with perfecting listening skills and following directions. As the child progresses,
the focus will be on perfecting those basic skills and taking them a step
further adding leaps, twists and springs to their movements. All this is
done in
a fun and safe environment. This class consists of the use of regular
mats, balance
beam, wedge mat and cylinder mat. HIP
HOP is
considered a fun form of dance learning the latest dance moves. It’s all
about your own personal style and no real technique is needed. Classes
start off
with a brief warm-up, continue with learning movements across the floor, and
end with applying what is learned to a combination center floor. These classes
are fun and relaxed and yet still apply the discipline of dance. FUNNASTICS
is
a fun introduction to the basics of gymnastics. Emphasis is on eye
hand coordination, balance, gross motor skills in a fun way. For ages 18 months
to 3 years and parents
are required to remain in the classroom and
participate with their children. JAZZ
DANCE is
a modern interpretation of ballet and has both an up-beat and a soft side. Jazz includes a structure that most everyone enjoys. The class begins (page 5) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- with
a warm-up center floor and also a series of stretches. Progressions across the
floor are where most of the time is spent and where turns, jumps and style are
learned. Occasionally the class will end with a combination center floor
to reinforce
techniques learned and to practice pick-up and memorization skills. MODERN
dance
is a combination of free movement, technique and yoga. The advanced
class offers choreography and improvisation. POINTE
is an
advanced technique of classical ballet involving the use of Pointe shoes.
Students must be at least 13 years and have extensive ballet training. STRETCH
& CONDITIONING is
open to all students 8 years and older wanting to
improve their flexibility. TAP
is a
form of dance, which helps develop rhythm and coordination. The student
learns the basic steps of tap such as shuffle, flap and ball-change. Then these
steps are combined to form combinations. Different styles of tap are also taught
such as soft-shoe, waltz clog and others. The more intermediate and advanced
classes include tap turns and leaps. TURNS
& LEAPS will
explore the technical aspects of traditional turns and leaps.
The students will learn the most contemporary and up to date approaches when
performing the movements. TUMBLING
is an
introduction to gymnastics for preschoolers beginning with stretches,
jumps, hops, basic mat work and balance beam. Children must be potty
trained. Important Registration Information 1.
All students are required to have a release wavier on file before
participating in a class. 2. Tuition

Representatives Your
child’s instructor will be searching for a parent from each class to be
the group's
representative. This person would serve as a liaison between the instructor
and the parents. She/he would help with passing on important information
to the parents. Only handouts approved by Rhythm In Motion Director,
Lanore Hensley may be distributed. If you feel you can assist in this
role, please
contact your instructor. Parent Meetings Parents
are asked to make every effort to attend the parent meetings. The first
one is scheduled for Monday September 12th at 7:00pm If you have any
questions or concerns about our program or your child, please feel
free to call Lanore Hensley any time at 321-693-1943 or our office at 321-773-6458.
A parent meeting will be scheduled for early April regarding
the recital. Please make every attempt to attend this meeting especially if you are new to our program.
(page 9) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Parent Notices Occasionally
it is necessary to notify students & parents about class changes, additional
rehearsals, recital information or other information that is important. All
these notices will be posted on the bulletin board that is located outside Studio
1. In some cases the class representative will make phone calls to notify parents
or notes will be sent home or emailed. Please be sure to check the bulletin
board and your child’s dance bag each week. Parent Viewing The
viewing room that is located between Studio 1 & 2 serves as a waiting
area for
parents/spectators while the student is in class. Spectators are not
allowed in the
dance studios while class is in session. Our instructors’ many years of experience
has shown that younger children respond better to instruction when parents
or visitors are not in the room to distract them. The viewing room is equipped
with one-way mirrors so you can view the students in an uninterrupted
manner and they cannot see you. In order for the students to not be
able to see into the viewing room from the classroom, it is necessary for
the lights
in the viewing room to remain off. Vertical blinds cover the windows in the
classroom and the instructor controls the opening and closing of these blinds.
Please keep in mind that some of our older students may wish to have these
blinds closed during their class. Occasionally some of the younger instructor
may choose to close these blinds. The instructor will open the blinds for
a 15-minute period sometime during the class. Please DO NOT POUND on the
viewing window as this is extremely disruptive. Also, keep in mind that when
it gets closer to recital and the children are working on their dance routines,
the instructor may choose to close the blinds for portions of the class. Holidays The
tuition has already been adjusted for Christmas holidays and Spring break when
classes do not meet. In the event a class must be cancelled for other reasons, a make-up class will be arranged.
(page 10) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attire Students
need to be in clothes suitable to learn dance. Uniform dress eliminates competition
between students and the students feel more like a unit when dressed
appropriately. Please be sure that your child has the required attire for dance
class within the first month of registering, as the proper dress is part
of the
discipline of the art. Please be sure that the student’s shoes and dance
bags are
properly marked with their name. For
any class, boys are required to wear bike shorts with either tank tops or
T-shirt. This
does not include hip-hop class. Past
recital costumes are not to be worn during class. SHOES
To
ensure proper fit, students are encouraged to purchase shoes at
Melbourne Danceware, 1905 Municipal Lane, Melbourne, or at Turners
on New Haven Avenue. It is suggested that ballet shoes NOT be purchased
at local discount stores. It is important to purchase ballet shoes that have
leather soles and not cardboard. Ribbon should be removed from all tap shoes
and replaced with elastic. Please ask the instructor how this is done. It
is also
recommended to discuss shoe purchases with the instructor prior to shopping.
Used shoes can be purchased from the instructor when available. HAIR
All
ballet students with long hair are asked to wear hair in a secure bun. Pin
the wisps of hair down with clips. Pony tails and braids tend to whip
around and
hit the child's eyes when they are turning. Gymnastic students should tie hair
back in low ponytail, pigtails or braids. Hair that falls in a student’s
face during
gymnastics can become a hazard and distracts from their concentration when
they are continually pushing it away. BALLET
students
are required to wear black leotards and pink tights. Short ballet skirts
are at the discretion of the instructor. BALLET
& TAP students
follow dress code outlined in above paragraph. Proper tap
shoes are required. Pink ballet shoes are preferred. Please do not use
ribbons to
tie tap shoes. Ask the instructor how to use elastic in tap shoes. BALLET,
TAP & TUMBLING students
are required to wear either pink or black leotards
and pink tights and proper footwear. FUNNASTICS
same
as Tumbling GYMNASTIC
students
are asked to wear a leotard of any color (with NO skirts). Gymnastic
students work barefoot. HIP-HOP
students
may wear fitness clothes and sneakers. JAZZ
students
should wear any solid color leotard and pink, tan or black tights. Also
allowed are jazz or Capri dance pants with halter-tops. NO T-shirts or
jeans. Jazz
shoes are required. MODERN
students
should wear comfortable clothes to move in but please no jeans.
All students must work barefoot. TUMBLING students are asked to wear comfortable clothing. No shoes are worn.
(page 11) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attendance ATTENDANCE
IS VITALLY IMPORTANT and we urge you to keep absenteeism to a
minimum. It’s to the student’s advantage to attend all lessons. In the
case of illness,
the instructor or the office will provide you with best suited days and times
for a make-up class. Credits are not applied for classes missed due to illness.
In the case of an extended illness, notify the Recreation Office and your instructor.
If a student has a minor injury that prevents them from participating in
class, it is to their advantage to come and observe the class while in
session. A
schedule will be provided with the best suited days and times to help the student
catch up with classes missed. Class Size A
minimum enrollment of 6 students per class is required. Classes with less |
