The topics will address
both parts of Law Enforcement, those parts which are seen
by the public and those that are seldom seen. For
example, the detectives will review the types and numbers
of crimes the city is dealing with, the types of drugs
being used locally and many other areas of concern.
The purpose of the Satellite Beach Police
Department Citizens Police Academy is to provide
enough information for the citizens who attend that they
may make informed judgments about the Police Department,
police activity, and law enforcement in general.
Understanding can dispel suspicions and misconceptions
and increase police/community rapport through this
educational process. The Department, in turn, becomes
more aware of the feelings and concerns of the community
from the students.
The Citizens Police Academy meets
on Thursday evenings for three hours. The academy runs
for 13 weeks and is held at Satellite Beach Recreation
Center, 510 Cinnamon Drive. Classes meet from 6:30 PM to
9:30 PM and requires a commitment from the student. Any
student who misses more than three meetings will not be
able to graduate.

Officer Training requirements:
Every officer hired by the Satellite
Beach Police Department is required to successfully
complete a Field Training Program (F.T.O.). The Satellite
Beach Police Departments F.T.O. program is a 16 week
on the job training course where officers
will be instructed and their performance carefully
evaluated and documented. Participants in the FTO program
are assigned to an experienced officer who has
specialized training to teach and evaluate new officers.
This training is specifically designed to assist the
recruit officer on transferring learned knowledge they
received in the police academy classroom to working
principals in the field. In addition to field performance
evaluations, officers must complete written exams,
quizzes, and practical exercises.
Once the Field Training Program has been
successfully completed, new officers are placed on a one
year probation where their performance is carefully
monitored to ensure the highest quality of law
enforcement professional.
To be considered for a position at the
Satellite Beach Police Department all applicants must
meet the minimum requirements as set forth by the Sate of
Florida for all police officers and have completed a
Florida Law Enforcement Academy or Equivalency Training.
