Citizen’s Police Academy:

The Citizen’s Police Academy is a look into the values, philosophy, and operations of the Satellite Beach Police Department. Designed for the residents of Brevard County, the academy educates citizens about the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of Law Enforcement, and the citizens role in the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. Students are expected to share this realistic view of the Department with other citizens to improve the efficiency of the law enforcement and order maintenance in their neighborhoods through shared responsibilities and resources.

A variety of topics are included in the Citizen’s Police Academy. Citizens examine training and related issues.

The topics will address both parts of Law Enforcement, those parts which are seen by the public and those that are seldom seen. For example, the detectives will review the types and numbers of crimes the city is dealing with, the types of drugs being used locally and many other areas of concern.

The purpose of the Satellite Beach Police Department Citizen’s Police Academy is to provide enough information for the citizens who attend that they may make informed judgments about the Police Department, police activity, and law enforcement in general. Understanding can dispel suspicions and misconceptions and increase police/community rapport through this educational process. The Department, in turn, becomes more aware of the feelings and concerns of the community from the students.

The Citizen’s Police Academy meets on Thursday evenings for three hours. The academy runs for 13 weeks and is held at Satellite Beach Recreation Center, 510 Cinnamon Drive. Classes meet from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM and requires a commitment from the student. Any student who misses more than three meetings will not be able to graduate.

You may apply by filling out an application and ‘Release of Information’ form, and return them to the address at the bottom. Remember to have the ‘Release of Information’ page notarized.

Officer Training requirements:

Every officer hired by the Satellite Beach Police Department is required to successfully complete a Field Training Program (F.T.O.). The Satellite Beach Police Departments F.T.O. program is a 16 week “on the job” training course where officers will be instructed and their performance carefully evaluated and documented. Participants in the FTO program are assigned to an experienced officer who has specialized training to teach and evaluate new officers. This training is specifically designed to assist the recruit officer on transferring learned knowledge they received in the police academy classroom to working principals in the field. In addition to field performance evaluations, officers must complete written exams, quizzes, and practical exercises.

Once the Field Training Program has been successfully completed, new officers are placed on a one year probation where their performance is carefully monitored to ensure the highest quality of law enforcement professional.
